How to make a high quality mug and why you'll probably never own Saddleback Leather's

After years of searching for the perfect Saddleback mug, Dave finally decided to just design one himself. The final product is a collaboration with the master potter Keith Thompson, owner of Firehouse Pottery just across town here in Fort Worth, TX.

Keith makes each Saddleback mug by himself, by hand. There's about 20 or so discrete processes involved in the creation of each mug, from measuring out the right sized hunk of clay, to forming it on the pottery wheel, to final touch ups of each finished mug. They're made in small batches over a 2 week period.

There are quicker and easier ways to make mugs, but Keith isn't interested in that. And neither is Dave. The result is a beautiful hand-crafted mug, each slightly unique. Because of the time-consuming and labor-intensive process, Keith just isn't able to make too many of these things. Which is why you'll probably never own one.

But it's nice to know they're out there.
