Andy Irvine & Dónal Lunny's Mozaik ~ 'The Humours of Parov'

Mozaik performing at 'The Galeri' in Caernarfon (Wales, UK), on Wednesday 26 September 2007.

According to the sleeve notes of Mozaik's CD 'Changing Trains', this piece was composed by Dónal Lunny to celebrate the distinction between the Bulgarian 'daichevo' 9/8 time [2-2-2-3] and the Irish slipjig, which is also in 9/8 time [3-3-3].

During his introduction, at the live gig, Andy also pointed out a hybrid rhythm that Dónal invented and which he amusingly called 'slippy-daichevo' [3-2-2-2], which 'turns' the daichevo rhythm 'around' by playing the long beat first, in order—I suppose—to prepare for the slipjig that follows. You can hear that intriguing rhythm (at 6:04) just before the straight slipjig (at 6:51), a rhythm combination they repeat before ending the whole piece.

With kind regards;
Patrick.
