This Week in Volcano News || Large Kanlaon Eruption. Seismic Unrest at Gede

This week, the Kanlaon Volcano in the central Philippines experienced a significant eruption, marking one of its most intense activities in recent years. On April 8, 2025, the volcano ejected an ash plume reaching approximately 4,000 meters (2.5 miles) into the atmosphere, prompting authorities to close nearby schools and issue health advisories due to ashfall.
Kanlaon, situated on Negros Island, is among the Philippines' 24 active volcanoes. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) has been closely monitoring the volcano due to its recent activity. In December 2024, an eruption produced a 5,000-meter-high plume and pyroclastic flows extending 2–3 kilometers down its slopes. This event led to the evacuation of over 23,000 residents, significant agricultural damage estimated at ₱104.8 million, and widespread ashfall affecting areas up to 85 kilometers away.
