SONY a6500 In Depth Review (vs. Sony a6300) | Worth it in 2019?

The Sony a6500 is an amazing camera. This review showcases some of the things I like about it and some things I dislike. I also show some of the a6500 cinematic video capabilities.

The menu system on the a6500 is similar to the a6300, but also has a lot more options. To me this is both a pro and a con. I’m always a fan of having more options when it comes to technology, and due to the extra amount of options and tech built into the a6500, that just means there’s a lot more you can do with it. On the flip side, however, that makes navigating the menu that much more time consuming. Even if you know exactly where the options are located.

Temperature wise, the Sony a6500 has never overheated on me. It’s actually never even gotten hot. It stays cooler than the Sony a6300 filming 1080p. I don’t usually filmed in 4k, but for the couple of times I did just as experimentation, temps were fine.

Things I LOVE about the Sony a6500:
1. In body image stabilization
2. On board noise reduction
3. Size and weight. 453g (approx. 1lb.) Just like the Sony a6300, due to its small size and mass, it’s incredibly easy to carry around and vlog with. Using the a6500 with a light weight lens like the Sony 10-18mm f4 makes vlogging a breeze.
4. The video quality is very good. It’s the same thing with the a6300, but since this is my main filming/vlogging camera, I have a lot more experience with video on the a6500.
5. Focusing with the touch screen. Touch focus comes in handy when the autofocus of the camera isn’t doing what you want it to do. It’s especially useful in wide aperture circumstances or when people are in the shot, and the camera automatically wants to focus on the object closest to it, or on a person. Instead of having to go into manual focus mode and focus manually from there, like with the a6300, all you have to do with the a6500 is just touch the screen wherever you want the camera to focus, and there you go! Unfortunately however, you can’t navigate menus with the touch screen. Not sure what Sony was thinking with that one?

Things I DON'T Like about the Sony a6500:
1. Will randomly stop recording. Doesn’t happen often at all, but when it does, it’s VERY annoying. I’ve had to re-film entire 6 minute clips before due to this.
2. No flip around screen! C’mon Sony! This is your most expensive crop sensor camera. I would kinda of expect this on this particular model.Takes longer to frame a video and get lighting right since you’re constantly going back and forth to see if things look good. I understand you could pick up a CamRanger or third party monitor, but those are just added expenses and you’re already paying top dollar for the a6500.
3. Auto noise reduction. This is a cool feature but it seems to keep turning on by itself. Even after I turn it off. Not sure what’s going on but it makes taking photos slower due to the noise reduction buffer time at the end of the shot.
