In conversation with Malala Yousafzai and Syed Babar Ali

An interactive discussion with two of the leading advocates of education in Pakistan. This talk will focus on the challenges Pakistan’s marginalized populations—notably minorities, women and low-income communities—face in accessing quality education and how institutions and individuals can help ensure inclusive and equitable quality education for all. According to the 2016-2017 Pakistan Economic Survey, the female literacy rate is 48% compared to 70% for males, highlighting the gender disparity that limits the potential of millions of Pakistani girls. This rate declines to 36% for the rural population. Although there are no official statistics available based on ethnicity, according to several rights group the education rates for minorities are less than the national average.

Malala Yousafzai, an education rights activist and a Nobel Laureate, has dedicated her life to fighting for girls’ right to education.

Syed Babar Ali, OBE, is a Pakistani businessman, philanthropist and former Finance Minister of Pakistan and is noted for founding Pakistan’s leading university, the Lahore University of Management Sciences.

The discussion will be moderated by Lant Pritchett, senior fellow at the Center for Global Development and Research Director of the Blavatnik School's RISE Programme.
