Should You Do Wide Grip or Medium Grip for Bench Presses? I've experimented with a lot of different grips in my time with chest training and back training, but one thing I've found over and over is that wide grip isn't necessarily the best, safest, or most effective option if you're trying to build a chest OR a back when it comes to back training. I've found that the medium grip is the best when it comes to bench pressing for a number of different reasons. First of all, it's safer. It's easier on the pec tendons and shoulders. Second of all, I find that you can get a better squeeze on the pecs with a medium grip, so the chest really hits failure at a faster rate then the delts do, WHICH of course, leads to more chest development.
