Sights of Almaty City, Kazakhstan

Almaty is Kazakhstan's largest city and was its capital until 1997 when the capital was moved to Astana.

Almaty (known during Soviet times as "Alma-Ata") derives its name from "father of apples", as the wild fruit is believed to have originated here.

Today, Almaty is a leading financial hub in Central Asia and an educational hub, with many universities, attracting students from all over Kazakhstan and the region.
