Pharaoh vs. God: What Really Happened in the Ten Plagues
Pharaoh wasn’t just a stubborn ruler — he believed he was a god. So when Moses stood before him with a command from the Lord, “Let my people go,” Pharaoh’s response revealed more than pride; it revealed a heart at war with God.
Through the Ten Plagues, God didn’t just punish Egypt — He revealed Himself. Each plague was a message to Pharaoh, to Israel, and to the world: “There is no one like Me.”
The Nile turned to blood showed God’s power over Hapi, the Egyptian god of the river. Frogs, gnats, and flies overran the land, mocking Egypt’s gods of fertility and nature. Livestock died, boils spread, and hail shattered their crops — striking down their idols one by one. Darkness blotted out the sun, silencing their belief in Ra, the sun god. And finally, the death of every firstborn son proved what Pharaoh refused to believe — that the God of Israel is sovereign over life itself.
But even in judgment, God’s compassion never failed. He protected His people in Goshen. He covered their homes with the blood of a lamb so that the angel of death would pass over. What looked like devastation for Egypt became deliverance for Israel — and a picture of salvation for us.
The plagues show that God is sovereign — He rules over all creation. He is supreme — no rival can stand against Him. And He is compassionate — providing a way of escape for those who trust Him.
Today, God still calls us to lay down our idols and trust His power, His timing, and His mercy. The same God who delivered Israel through blood and judgment delivers us through the blood of Jesus Christ — the Lamb who takes away the sin of the world.
“When I raise my powerful hand and bring out the Israelites, the Egyptians will know that I am the Lord.” — Exodus 7:5
