Lake Tarawera Water Taxi

Tarawera has been visited by people from all over the world for well over a century. Visitors, once came to visit the 8th Natural Wonder of the World, The Pink and White Terraces. It was the duty of Guides belonging to the local Maori tribe of Tuhourangi to see their visitors safely across Lake Tarawera to the Terraces at Rotomahana.

We no longer have the Pink and White Terraces as they were all but destroyed in the Mount Tarawera eruption of the 10th June 1886. However there are many other amazing sights at Lake Tarawera that we will be delighted to show you, just as our Tuhourangi ancestors did.

The Tarawera Trail which opened on the 14th of December 2013 is ideal for those who love to walk. It is destined to be one of the “Great Walks of New Zealand” This first stage, a 15 kilometre walk, takes you from Te Wairoa (just beyond the Buried Village at Lake Tarawera, Rotorua) right through to Hot Water Beach on its southern shores. A New Zealand native bush walk with magnificent lake and mountain views, access to beaches and natural springs that are steeped in Maori history. Catch a Water Taxi back at the end of your Tarawera Trail walk. (Bookings are essential for the taxi service)
