Prophet Rev2 Synth - Van Halen Jump Brass Patch
This is a patch from my Voice Component Modeling Sound Set (https://sellfy.com/sounddesign/p/figz/) - one of the most iconic synth sounds of the 1980s, Van Halen's "Jump" Brass synth sound. This is a patch that is often attempted for recreation on a variety of modern synths. In my patch design, I A/B'd the tone with the Van Halen Remaster (2015).
In analyzing the studio recording, there are a few things that I noticed, that I haven't seen mentioned elsewhere. 1. The sound appears to be double tracked with the phase inversed on one layer. (This is replicated by using the stack/layer function in the Rev2, and I'm inverting phase on right channel in post... other than that everything is direct from Rev2) 2. The oscillator setup is one saw and one thin pulse one octave up... this can be seen if you analyze the studio recording, and helps to capture the buzzy tone. 3. I have incorporated voice modeling techniques (VCM) to replicate the 8-voice OBX voice setup and with voice variance in tuning and envelope timing based on measurements I took from OBX synths.
I believe if the Rev2 had the same SEM 2-pole filter, it would be nearly identical in tone... but it's pretty close even with the Curtis 2-pole on the Rev2. If you A/B with the studio recording, you can hear slight difference.
