Axial flux motor for electric boats

This is the third EMRAX motor we have set up with the new generation of Curtis controllers. These motors were originally designed to power aircraft and a version powers the worlds first certified electric aircraft made by Pipistral. Most motors today are a radial flux design with an internal rotor. Radial flux motors operate most efficiently at higher RPMs (Around 4000RPM) where axial flux motors can operate efficiently at a much lower speed. The Emrax motor is also an outrunner design. As you can see in the Video the outside of the motor spins. This gives the motor high power at lower RPM and makes it suitable for direct connection to a propeller. These motors can also be stacked on a single shaft allowing for very high power (up to about 400HP cont) from a very compact , light propulsion package. Without any load on the motor it spins up very fast on the bench. The acceleration is programable and very consistent when turning a prop in the water.
