Let's Do Contour Drawing Together

No new technology this week. In fact I decided that we'd look at something you can do with pencil and paper if you're not fully teched up with a tablet and computer, etc. And it's been a while since I just chatted about art stuff. So grab a sketchbook. Grab a pencil. And find a comfy chair.

Cause it's time to work on contour drawings!

And yep, they'll probably suck to all get out, but have fun anyway!

Squiggly Lines or Contour Drawing?

So, have you ever tried drawing with staring at your paper incessantly? Does the thought of not fine tuning your sketch drive you mad? Are you a perfectionist?

Well, get rid of those thoughts because we are just going to scribble for a bit. Contour drawing practice is meant to help you take what you see and put it down on the paper. Too often we try to draw what we think we see. This can be a major problem, as our mind kind of skews what we see because it already knows what things look like. It knows a table has a top, bottom, legs, etc. But when you're looking at something, you may not be able to see all those parts.

But your brain tells you to draw them anyway!

Well, with contour drawing, we stair at what we are drawing and never look at the paper. We move our pen or pencil around and try and "feel" what the object or figure looks like.

We translate what our eye sees onto the paper.

So follow along and have some fun with our contour drawing this week!
