Vijay Fined ₹1 lakh for Entry Tax on his Rolls Royce Car

In 2012, South Indian actor Vijay had imported the Rolls Royce Ghost car from England. He had paid more than Rs 8 crore for the luxury car. Since the car was imported, he also had to pay approximately Rs 1.6 crore as entry tax. However, this was unacceptable to Vijay and he filed a petition in the Madras High Court, saying the entry tax imposed on his car is too much and that it should be reduced. During a hearing, Justice SM Subramaniam who was presiding over the case, scolded Vijay a lot. He said, “Firstly, you don’t mention your profession in the petition. We came to know you are an actor only after your lawyer mentioned it. Taxation enables building of infrastructure like schools, hospitals, roads, providing pensions and setting up projects for the poor. Vijay is a hero with a large fan base. He has a costly car from England but does not want to pay entry tax. If he is a hero in movies, he should behave like a hero in real life as well by understanding the importance of paying tax. Avoiding paying tax is an anti-national habit and unconstitutional.”

The Judge also scolded him for wasting the court’s time with such a petition. The actor was ordered to pay the entry tax. He was also fined Rs 1 lakh, for wasting the court’s time and challenging the entry tax. Vijay has been directed to pay the fine amount to the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister's Covid-19 Public Relief Fund within two weeks.
