The football-size mass weighing more than 10 lbs has been growing on Amar's face for more than a decade!
So what is it? and why didn't he seek treatment earlier?
Amar, 19 y-o, was abandoned by his mother when his father died of malaria when he was a child and had to struggle to take care of himself and his two brothers. His socio-economic condition made it hard for him to get any health care until volunteering doctors visited his village and reported his case.
Amar was diagnosed with ossifying fibroma resulting from a rare genetic disease called, get ready: Hyper-parathyroidism Jaw Tumor Syndrome which usually causes small-size on the jaw.
The 19 y-o boy needed to be urgently operated. He was losing his left eye sight and risked dying from breathing difficulties or hunger. News of his unusual case spread and Surgeons at Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences in south India accepted to operate him free of charge.
The operation lasted 14 hours. Doctors removed the 10 lbs mass and reconstructed his jaw and nose using his leg's bone. Several months after, his eye was re-adjusted and new teeth were implanted.
Amar was so grateful to the doctors who saved his life and said that this was like a second birth for him. " I could never mingle with other children of my age, as they used to be repulsed by my appearance. I am now eager to go back home, make friends again and work in the fields." he reported.
