High Performance Budget NAS Build - 50T Network Attached Storage. Two ways: FreeNAS & ZFS on CentOS
Complete guide to setting up your own high capacity storage server on your network. Walking you through the hardware selection, build, and BIOS config. Then showing how to do this with both FreeNAS, and by hand with the ZFS on Linux using CentOS 8, but any modern distribution will work that can run the OpenZFS package (Ubuntu, Debian, RHEL, etc).

At the time I made this video (Sept, 2020), this was the most bang for the buck all around: Cost, capacity, and performance. Technically 12T drives were the same cost per gigabyte as the 10T drives, but I wanted to keep the sticker price under $3k total.
The parts I used (and affiliate links that I'd greatly appreciate if you used, which cost you nothing extra, but help me make content like this):
8x Seagate 10T SATA HDD ST10000NM0086 https://amzn.to/3kwD1u5
1x ASUS X570 TUF Gaming mobo X570-PLUS https://amzn.to/2ZLB8Sr
1x AMD Ryzen 5 2600X CPU YD260XBCAFBOX https://amzn.to/3iLywvk
1x Corsair Vengeance LPX 32GB kitcmk32gx4m2z3200c16 https://amzn.to/33I7aQd
2x WD 500G M.2 PCIe NVMe WDS500G3X0C https://amzn.to/33FZ0bk
2x Intel 10GbE NIC X540T https://amzn.to/2ZO8MXO
1x Antec P101 silent case P101 https://amzn.to/2ZSHXS2
1x EVGA 750W power supply 110-BQ-0750-V1 https://amzn.to/35Oqga5
1x Zotac PCIe 1x graphics card ZT-71304-20L https://amzn.to/2RCoj8q
1x 6 pack of sata cables B07DRF1XDC https://amzn.to/2EddZ3A
Extra notes on ZFS on Linux:
You should set a few other options on your ZFS volume. I forgot to record these at the time I was screen capturing my ssh session:
# zfs set compress=lz4 storage
# zfs set atime=off storage
# zfs set xattr=sa storage
And if you are using yours for large files like me (video), also set:
# zfs set recordsize=1M storage
