Quaint USAQUEN !! 🇨🇴 Bogota Day Trip To A Lovely Market Town!

We woke up at about 7 30 am and had some cheese covered toast and hot water for breakfast. We then set out on a walk to try and take a bus to Monserrate, but it was Sunday so the main bus street near us was closed to cars and buses from 7am- 2pm. So we walked down the street with the locals on bikes, rollerblades and running. We checked out some lovely street art and then bought some coffee at a shop to make back at our room. We enjoyed the hotel's rooftop and patio and watched people go by.
At about 2pm we caught the M68 bus north towards Usaquen. We just missed the bus we wanted, so we walked to the next stop. The bus app told me we were at the wrong stop so we walked back to the first stop but then missed a subsequent bus… We waited for a third bus, but it was quite a long wait. The Bogota bus app is crazy and barely functional at the best of times.
The bus ride to Usaquen took twenty minutes. Bogota definitely does get nicer as you travel north. The neighbourhoods we drove through looked very safe. We jumped off the bus at Usaquen and saw a cool little alley with shops, so we went down it. This road ended up being a dead end, so we ventured down another road and found the little white tents of the Usaquen market set up. There were shops selling everything from handmade jewellery to hot sauce, artisan bread, colourful handbags, toys… everything looked hand crafted! There were also street performers; a man playing saxophone, a crooner gentleman, a clarinet player, some hip hop dancers and many more… There were also these guys that painted themselves and stood like statues. It was a very lively atmosphere with tourists and locals and local dogs!! Thus far it feels like Colombia is obsessed with dogs! I think every person in Bogota owns at least two dogs and they bring them everywhere!
We stopped to eat at a place called BBC or the Bogota Brewing Company. I guess it’s a pretty big chain here. We ordered two veggie burgers, a plate of potatoes and JIves got an IPA while I got a stout. The beer was so good. I liked mine better than Jives’ beer. My beer was fruity without being too sweet like some stouts tend to be. The veggie burger was like a falafel with fava beans in it on a brioche bun with cabbage and pickles sliced fine. The potatoes stole the show, they were cubbed and came with a garlic dip. Potatoes in Colombia are really good. The meal came to 100,000 pesos ($32 Canadian) which isn’t cheap, but it ended up being the only meal we had all day, so it kind of equals out I think.
We then walked around the central park area and main square of Usaquen, and then back to catch the bus (which we ran to this time and caught). The ride back to Chapinero took about twenty minutes. When we jumped off the bus, we did so right in front of a grocery store so we went in to grab some eggs, tomatoes, corn chips and beer. This was much cheaper than our previous groceries at 20,000 for everything! We went back to our room to regroup before heading to the BBC pub just down the street from our hotel, somehow we had not seen it earlier. We ordered two beers from the sweet guy working there. He spoke no English so I said “dos cerveza”... pretty much tapping out all of the Spanish I know. He pointed at the size of glass at a nearby table and I said “si”. We laughed at our mutual success. He was super sweet and dancing and singing along to the music in the bar when we went back in to pay later.
It was after dark when we walked back to the hotel later, but the hotel was about 10 metres away. Walking after dark was breaking all my rules, but it felt pretty safe in this neighbourhood. We then sat on our little rooftop patio at the hotel and watched the traffic and lights. It was a lovely end to a somewhat stressful day. My only goal that day was to succeed at something and go somewhere, and I had finally succeeded!
