The Problem Does Not Come From Outside | Gyomay Kubose
Excerpt from an article by Gyomay Kubose.
Gyomay M. Kubose, or Masao Kubose (1905 - 2000), was a Japanese-American philosopher, writer, and Buddhist teacher.
Although born in the United States, Kubose spent most of his life in Japan, where he absorbed the rich Buddhist heritage. After returning to the United States, he graduated with a degree in Philosophy from the University of California at Berkeley in 1935. He then returned to Japan, where he began studying Buddhism with his teacher, Reverend Haya Akegarasu.
Accompanying his teacher on his lecture tours, Kubose traveled throughout Japan, Korea, China, and the United States. In 1944, after World War II, Kubose moved to Chicago, where he founded the Chicago Buddhist Temple.
Throughout his life, Kubose emphasized and taught non-sectarian Buddhism to all.
Often cited for his contributions to social justice, civil rights, and community relations, Gyomay Kubose wrote several books on Buddhism, meditation, and ethics. Throughout his life, he focused on bridging the gap between Eastern spirituality and Western society. His approach to Buddhism emphasized its practical applications in everyday life, making it accessible and relevant to people from all walks of life.
Gyomay Kubose's contributions to Buddhism in the United States have left a lasting impact, inspiring generations of practitioners to find inner peace and compassion through the teachings of the Buddha.
“When we begin to see the Light, the world becomes bright and the Light shines upon us. Every day is not just another day, every day is meaningful and meaningful, a day of reverence and worth living. Every day is a day of fulfillment and gratitude.”
Gyomay Kubose.
“Buddhism teaches that everything that exists is the result of karma and you are responsible, not something else. No external agent is responsible for your happiness or despair.”
Gyomay Kubose.
“The enlightenment of not only Shakyamuni Buddha but each individual must find this new perspective on life, this new perspective in your life and in everything.”
Gyomay Kubose.
