800 Feet Deep: How US Submarine Sank China's Best Nuclear Attack Sub

On October 14th, 2025, a Chinese Type 093 Shang-class nuclear submarine attempted to hunt a US Virginia-class attack submarine in the disputed waters of the South China Sea. What began as a tense game of cat-and-mouse escalated into the first submarine-on-submarine combat since the Cold War. The Chinese submarine fired a Yu-6 torpedo, forcing the USS Mississippi to retaliate with a Mark 48 ADCAP. In just 12 minutes, the engagement was over. The Changzheng 15 was critically damaged, forced to surface, and eventually sank, taking 9 crew members with her. The USS Mississippi emerged unscathed. This is the complete tactical analysis of how superior sonar technology, patient tracking, and disciplined execution allowed an American submarine to dominate an opponent that underestimated the cost of aggression 800 feet beneath the surface.
