Understanding Cysts In Kidneys

Dr. Vaibhav Keskar, Nephrologist at Fortis Hospital (Mumbai) and Kimaya Kidney Care (Thane), explains what kidney cysts are and why they are commonly seen in reports after scans done for other reasons. He clarifies that while the term can sound concerning, not all cysts indicate disease, and understanding the type is important.

Key points:
• Kidney cysts are fluid-filled cavities seen on ultrasound, CT scan, or MRI
• Often detected incidentally during scans done for other reasons
• Two types: Acquired cysts and Inherited cysts

Acquired cysts:
• Common with increasing age
• Usually simple cysts
• Age-related and harmless
• Do not indicate disease
• Require only periodic monitoring with ultrasound
• Doctors may advise checking cyst size over time

Complex cysts:
• Some cysts are complex
• May require further evaluation and additional tests

Inherited cysts:
• Most common: ADPKD (Autosomal Dominant Polycystic Kidney Disease)
• Multiple cysts develop in both kidneys
• Kidneys increase in size
• Gradual decline in kidney function
• Can present at different ages
• Often has a family history
• Genetic condition → family members may also be at risk

Important:
• Early detection is important
• Lifestyle changes and medications can help slow progression
• Differentiating between acquired and inherited cysts is essential
