Vivid Varanasi | Buddha Air | Travel Varanasi

As the oldest living city in the world, #Varanasi is believed to have been inhabited since the 20th century. The legend of the city itself dates back to 10,000 years and is the historic setting for many Hindu scriptures. The city is said to have been founded by Lord Shiva.

Regarded as the Spiritual Capital of India, Varanasi is one of the seven holy cities (Sapta Puri). Flanked by hundreds of ghats (steps) along the Ganges River, it is here that you witness the daily rituals of people. Different ceremonies are performed on the different ghats from Varanasi from daily ablutions, pujas, meditation, yoga and cremations. Perhaps the most documented occasion to experience at Varanasi is the Ganga Aarti which takes place every evening on Dashashwamedh Ghat. The ghat glows in mellow tones of orange as priests perform the aarti.

Varanasi is not just for the religious. Tucked away in the labyrinth of alleyways are tiny shops and restaurants that sell silk saris, sweets, lassis and vegetarian cuisine that Varanasi is renowned for.

A short distance from Varanasi is Sarnath - a place of immense religious importance. It was at Sarnath at around 530 B.C that Lord Buddha gave his first sermon after gaining enlightenment. Towering over 30 meters tall is the Dhamekh Stupa which is believed to be the exact spot that Lord Buddha gave his sermon - setting in motion the Dharmachakra.

At Gaya, Hindu pilgrims offer pinda at the Vishnupad Temple to honor the deaths of loved ones. For others, Gaya is a transit point to Bodh Gaya - the most important site for Buddhist pilgrimage. 13 km away from Gaya is the Mahabodhi Temple. This temple dates back to the 7th century and is 55 meters tall. It is a UNESCO world heritage site as this is where Siddhartha Gautama gained enlightenment while meditating under a Bodhi Tree and became known as Lord Buddha (The Awakened One).
