In May 2020, demonstrations began in cities across the United States and around the world in response to the death of George Floyd, a Black man who was killed by a white police officer in Minneapolis, Minnesota. “Black Lives Matter” became a rallying cry at the protests, which demanded an end to violence against Black people in America, and sought to raise awareness about racism in our society. The phrase dates back to 2013, when three Black activists started the hashtag in response to a murder trial in Florida.
