Irish Born Military Leaders Of The U.S. Civil War

Irish-born military leaders played key roles on both sides of the U.S. Civil War. On the Union side, Thomas Francis Meagher, leader of the famed Irish Brigade, became a symbol of immigrant courage and sacrifice. Michael Corcoran, commander of the 69th New York, was another prominent Irish nationalist-turned-Union officer. For the Confederacy, Patrick Cleburne, known as the “Stonewall of the West,” rose to major general and became one of its most respected leaders. Together, these Irishmen left a lasting mark on America’s bloodiest conflict. Other prominent leaders include County Down born Union General Robert Nugent, Fermanagh born William Gamble who was a Union Brigadier General, Monaghan born Confederate Brigadier General Joseph Finegan, Union Captain Richard Busteed from Cavan, the infamous Kerry born Union Major General Patrick Connor and Tyrone born Confederate Colonel James Hagan.
