What Is a Grid Constraint?

Push too much power through a transmission line and you'll break it.

That's the reality behind what's called a grid constraint. When more electricity is generated in Scotland than the wires can physically carry south, wind farms have to be curtailed, or turned off.

The grid is carved up by transmission boundaries: invisible lines marking where the wires become a bottleneck.

The main one between Scotland and England is the B6. But right now, the worst constraint is further north, inside Scotland itself.
