Our new pug puppy, Cassie meets our rescued Asian small-clawed otters. They are all too cute. The otters have grown up with many of our dogs and are used to them, but can't wrap their heads around this flat-face puppy dog it seems. The otters were rescued as pups and are now friends with all our animals.

THE OTTERS STORY
These otters were rescued as orphaned week-old pups. They would have died without us. They get to swim in sea coves, mangroves, and our creeks for many hours a day to forage on their own. We have tried to release them but each time we had to rescue them from poachers and snare traps and were badly wounded. They were not raised as pets and we followed the protocols given to us by IOSF, but they are now bonded to us and all the other creatures on our 5 acres or 2-hectare property. Asian small-clawed otters mate for life. Only the parents breed, the siblings raise each other until they form a tight family group of up to 12. When you see an Asian small-clawed otter as a pet, most likely its parents were killed and the babies left to die, as none of the female siblings can nurse them. We have found up to 6 otter babies dead after the parents were killed. Those that survive are put into an environment meant to harbor only so many otter families, so it also burdens the ecosystem.

We tried to release them using the IOSF protocols. On the first try, one of them was caught in a snare trap and we got there just in time to save her but she was badly wounded. Good her sister was biting the poacher until we got there. Had she been alone, she surely would have been caught.
The second time also failed. The only way to release them would be if a wild male of age were caught and rehabilitated with the female of his choice. The other female otter would then be alone.
