Armed neighbor saves teen from burglar

MIDDLETOWN, Ohio (WKRC) - In surveillance video, people can tell that Miles Sims is afraid.

He darts out of his house and across the street. A man was casing the 15-year-old's home on Prospect Avenue, checking to see if anyone was inside before trying to break into the house. Miles's mother was at work at the time.

Tonya Malcolm said, "I felt my phone vibrate and I looked at it and Miles had called his dad and his dad called me and said, 'Your house is being robbed right now.'"

The cameras and surveillance system belong to a neighbor across the street, Larry Glenn. That's whose house Miles ran to for help and Larry did come out with his loaded gun to look for the burglar. Larry found the burglar as he was breaking into his neighbor's home.

Larry said, "The door was open. He was in the threshold and we locked eyes and I said, 'What are you doing here?' And he turned around and he froze and he took off. I cocked my gun and it made him take off."

Police caught the man a short time later. They say he's Keith Barrett. They told Larry that this was his second burglary of the day.

Miles's mother is grateful to have a neighbor like Larry who was in the right place at the right time to help.

"We need more people like Larry to make sure that the people that are coming in are aware that we are watching. We are ready," said Tonya.

Keith Barrett faces several charges including burglary in possession of criminal tools.
