Jewish Holidays Explained: What is Tashlikh? Jews, at the Beach, Throwing Bread.

What is Tashlikh? And why are all those people standing on the beach or on a bridge throwing bread into the water?

Tashlikh is a Jewish practice that has evolved as a way to physically manifest the holy work of ridding ourselves of our sins and bad habits as we prepare for a new year, during the Yamim Nora'im - the 10 Days of Awe from Rosh Hashanah to Yom Kippur.

We cast bread into bodies of flowing water to represent how God "will cast all our sins into the depths of the sea." (Micah 7:19)

If you want to do it with us this year, join Burbank Temple Emanu El at Will Rogers State Beach in Santa Monica, Station 12, at 10:30am this Sunday, September 24, 2017.
