Cinq Miniatures: V.

5. Cinq Miniatures (1997), Philippe Hersant
Hersant wrote this piece to honor the music of different cultures around the world through the versatile colors of the alto flute. The first movement pays homage to Jolivet and Edgard Varèse, quoting Varèse’s Amériques, and also imitating the sound of the Shakuhachi. The second movement is inspired by elements of an Algerian song. The third movement vaguely reflects inspiration from indigenous music of North Africa. The fourth movement seeks to imitate the Dizi, the Chinese flute. The final movement quotes an Amazigh improvisation from a wedding in the Sahara.
