Spud 3: Behind the Scenes (12mins)

Most of the cast return for this sequel, headed up by film and television legend John Cleese. Troye Sivan reprises his role as Spud. World famous South African YouTuber Caspar Lee makes his screen debut in the role of garrulous Garlic from Malawi. They are joined by the rest of the Crazy 8 gang – Sven Ruygrok (Rambo), Byron Langley (Simon Brown), Travis Hornsby (Boggo), Blessing Xaba (Fatty), and Thomas Burne (Vern). Spud’s love interests are Genna Blair (Mermaid), and Alex McGregor (Christine). Aaron McIlroy and Julie Summers play Spud’s parents, with Brenda Ngxoli (Innocence) and Christine Le Brocq (Wombat).

Author John van de Ruit wrote the screenplay adaptation for the film, his first foray into screenwriting. John Barker of Bunny Chow and 31 Million Reasons fame comes on board as director, and brings some freshness to the third installment of the franchise.

The film is produced by Ross Garland of Rogue Star Films. Cinematographer Willie Nel joins the franchise for the first time, alongside 5FM DJ Jon Savage who composed the music in the film. Tsotsi alumnus and prolific editor Megan Gill, returns to edit.

The film was shot in Cape Town, South Africa in July 2013. All the sets and wardrobe were adapted to be authentic for the 1992 setting of the story.

Times Media Films has acquired the distribution rights to Africa, and will release the film in Southern African cinemas on 28 November 2014.
