Is the most popular piano practice advice also the most useful? | 3 over-stated ideas
There is a wealth of advice around learning piano and certain ideas get picked up and repeated almost everywhere we look.
However, just because a piece of advice is popular, doesn't necessarily mean that it's the most powerful thing we can do. Equally, just because something works well with a certain type of music, doesn't mean it works for everything.
To put things in context, I found piano 'easy' until I got to around Grade 8. Then, I seemed to hit a wall and not long after simply stopped playing. This video covers three things that on returning to piano I decided for myself were perhaps part of the reason that all those years ago I was failing to improve. I therefore implemented them in my practice and persevered with them for some time. However, they are things that now I do much less and, I believe, as a result I'm making more progress!
You can learn about the three things that now I do instead of this here: https://youtu.be/p-q2h7AyY1U
The chapter markers are given below:
00:00 Three Internet Tips
00:28 Hands Separate - or should we use only as an 'emergency exit'?
03:23 100% mastery of everything we learn - or does this result in repertoire museums?
06:27 Never practice wrong notes - or welcome them and learn from them?
I mentioned three different books during the video - all of which I think are worth reading as part of our wider piano studies (Amazon links below):
The Fundamentals of Piano Practice - Chuan C Chang : https://amzn.to/3phTiuJ
The Art of Piano Playing - Heinrich Neuhaus : https://amzn.to/3M06lKa
The Perfect Wrong Note - William Westney : https://amzn.to/42yiPOo
