The Chancellor of Soul. Mike Boone presents on his WCOS Internet
Radio show, 'Soul Facts' about 3 legendary background female vocalists who's musical contribution, helped create the genesis of
the most celebrated record company in the world,Motown Records
the group, The Andantes.

Jackie Hicks, Marlene Barlow, and first Andante member Emily
Phillips all hailed from Detroit Michigan. They first sang together
at the Hartford Baptist Church, each being 12 years of age.
Their pianist at the church, Mildred Dobey, knighted the girls, the
Andantes because like their voices, it meant soft and sweet.

In 1959, future Andante member, Louvain Demps, born in New York
and raised in Detroit, first attended the Rayber Music Writing Company, founded by songwriter, Berry Gordy Jr. and his then wife
Raymona Liles, seeking fresh new talent in the city. After Demps
auditioned a song composed by a friend of hers, the staff at the
company was very impressed with her sorprano voclas. She then became a member of Raymona Gordy's Rayber Voices, who sang
background to most of the artist Berry Gordy composed for.

In 1960, legenday songwriter/ pianist Richard 'Popcorn' Wylie, who
attended Northwestern High School with two of the Andantes, Jackie
Hicks and Marlene Barlow, brought the girls to Motown Records,
because he needed hand claps and background voices for his
sessions. Wylie's stay at the company wasn't a very long one,
but the Motown staff wanted the girls to stay, although they were
not intereted.

Afterwards, member Emily Phillips got married and her husband didn't
want her to sing anymore. Still not interested, the girls look for any means to get out, saying they were down to a twosome and needed
a 3rd party to complete the set. So the label hooked them up with
Rayber Voice member, Louvain Demps who sings sorprano, and the
trio was born.

The Andantes were on call 24/7 because their voices represented
the artists' sound. Their beautiful angelic voices were lent to a total of
20,000 classic recordings with Motown artists and were paid only &
5 dollars a session, until a few years later, the stakes rose to mesily
7 dollars, a few years later. To continue to make a living, the Andantes began moonlighted sessions with artists in other labels
such as Jerry Butler and the Dells on Vee Jay Records, Edwin Starr,
Laura Lee and the Fantastic 4 on Ric Tic, Jackie Wilson on Brunswick ,Bobby 'Blue' Bland on Duke Records and so many other
artists on other record labels.

Not wanting to lose the the Motown signature sound, Berry Gordy
reluctively let the Andantes record their own song composed by
Holland Dozier Holland called, 'Like A Nightmare' on V.I.P (Motown's
subsidary label in 1964. Lack of promotion and having the girls in studio for background recording and with a few copies pressed, the
song died a quick death.

The end of an era came when Motown officially moved their operations on the West Coast in California in 1972, leaving behind
most of Motown's east coast artists and musicians, including the
Andantes. A year later in 1973, Louvian Demps moved to Atlanta,Ga.

During the mid 80's, the Andantes got together along with other former Motown artists and recorded for Ian Levine's Motor City Records imprint.

Although uncredited, the Andantes still made a great musical
contribution and played a major role in not only the legacy of Motown
but R&B and Pop music alike.
