Impressive structure relocation projects
You might think there’s nothing more steady than a building but in fact, even buildings can be moved with the right resources. Structure relocations are indeed somewhat common, and they involve repositioning a building into a new location. So, how does this laborious work happen?
We bring you several examples of buildings being moved, so you can see first hand.
The Lagena Primary School in China is an 85-year-old school building that has recently been relocated to a new location. The building was moved step by step by robot legs with wheels on them.
Then, there's the Belleview-Biltmore Hotel, which was rolled into another place using Buckingham Dollies. A five-story building in Florida has moved 300 ft (91 m) to its new location.
The shelter building relocation project involved the relocation of a historic structure from an eroding bluff. Steel beams and wheels were used to move the 1,250-ton building, which weighed 2,500,000 pounds (1,250 tons).
The Buchanan Mansion, a 125-year-old residence, was relocated 8.5 miles (13.7 kilometers) away. Multipoint jacking systems and self-propelled dollies were used to move the entire structure.
It took 18 months to find a suitable property for the relocation of this other six-year-old house. However, the actual relocation process took only 38 minutes.
Finally, you can see a New York Avenue building weighing 880 tons being relocated 34 feet (10.4 m). The structure was moved onto a concrete slab for safety reasons.
Have these examples piqued your curiosity? Then watch our video to see more instances of the engineering process behind moving buildings including dolly transports and more.
