The town of Kalambaka (Καλαμπάκα), Greece

Kalambaka (Καλαμπάκα) - also spelled Kalabaka or Kalampaka is a town and a municipality in the Trikala regional unit, part of Thessaly in Greece. The town is well known all over the world due to the legendary monasteries built atop Meteora rocks, situated near the eastern and northern part of the settlement. Kalambaka is a settlement with prosperous history and significant monuments. The town is built on the location of the ancient city of Aiginion (Eginion), during the 4th century BC. During the 10th century, Kalambaka was known by the name Stagi, when it had become a significant center of the Byzantine Empire. Relics of an ancient Greek temple of that same period have been incorporated in the wall of the town’s oldest and most renowned 10th century church, dedicated to the Assumption of Virgin Mary. This church is situated northeast of the settlement, at the base of the great rock by the name Agia. It is a must-see monument of Kalambaka, for its age and precious 11th and 16th-century Byzantine frescoes, as well as the ancient marbles visible on the outside walls. This is definitely one of the most precious early Christian basilicas around Greece. Kalambaka has numerous accommodations for tourists visiting Meteora. There are numerous hotels, restaurants, bars, traditional taverns and gift shops in the town of Kalambaka and the surrounding villages. The busy main square has lots of little shops catering for the tourists, restaurants and cafes. It’s a lively place in the evenings and as a result there are lots of facilities to accommodate the passing traveller. Visit the town’s old picturesque district, with narrow cobble-stoned streets and traditional houses, some of them built right next to the rocks. Join a walking tour of the old town with a local guide, to discover the town’s unique beauty and history. Visit the Museum of Meteora Natural History and Mushroom Museum . It's located at a distance of 5 min walk from the center of Kalambaka town. The museum aims to present the natural history and importance of the region of Meteora as well as various aspects of the world natural history. Kalambaka has a long tradition in the production of hand-made, wood-carved objects, but also in the making of religious icons that are painted by domestic artists. Also, take a look at the local variety of embroideries, the leather-sandals shops and the local souvenir shops. The town also lies within 2km of the monasteries, so is ideal for those wishing to visit the legendary monasteries. While there are 27 monasteries in the region, only six are still in operation and open to the public. Whether you decide to visit them by bus, by foot or by car, these are a must-see. While this small city is primarily visited for its incredible setting beneath the astounding Meteora pinnacles, Kalambaka itself is a pleasant place to stop and relax.
