Sea Firefly Island of Japan | How to Go See Mysterious Glowing Blue Water at Sensuijima (ウミホタル)
Day 2 of our Seishun Travel Series continues. It`s almost evening time. We were headed to Sensuijima to see the sea fireflies (ウミホタル). It`s located at Fukuyama, Hiroshima. It took a lot of travel but after seeing nature`s gift, it was all definitely worth it. Let us feel the mysterious power of these sea creatures. Time to glow in the dark!!!
What is Seishun 18?
The Seishun 18 allows unlimited rides on local and rapid JR trains (excluding reserved seats) throughout Japan from Hokkaido in the north to Kyushu in the south. Although the Seishun 18 is not valid on Shinkansens and limited express trains, it is a great way to enjoy travel at a more leisurely pace. This ticket package includes five days worth of travel for only 2,410 yen per day. One person can enjoy the Seishun 18 for five days, or it can be split for use by up to five people. The unlimited rides also include use of the JR Miyajima Ferry for travel from the mainland to the island of Itsukushima, popularly known as Miyajima. The Seishun 18 is a great way to enjoy leisurely travel.

What are sea fireflies?
Vargula hilgendorfii, sometimes called the sea-firefly and one of three bioluminescent species known in Japan as umi-hotaru (海蛍), is a species of ostracod crustacean. It is the only member of genus Vargula to inhabit Japanese waters; all other members of its genus inhabit the Gulf of Mexico, the Caribbean Sea, and waters off the coast of California. V. hilgendorfii was formerly more common, but its numbers have fallen significantly.

Where is Sensuijima?
The island of Sensuijima, located in the Tomonoura harbor of Fukuyama City, Hiroshima, is surrounded by clear blue waters and covered in lush greenery. Sensuijima can be accessed by ferry from Tomonoura, and is only five minutes away.
An island 6km in circumference, symbolizing the scenic beauty of the town of Tomo-no-Ura. It is a place with many natural treasures like the Goshikiiwa (Five-Colored Rocks) and the sea fireflies. There are also plenty of leisure facilities on the island such as accommodations, a camping ground, and a beach.
