Sekou Cooke : 3D turntables (March 21, 2022)
Please note: the audio tracks of J Dilla and Mos Def featured in this lecture have been removed at the copyright owner’s request.
After Tom Wiscombe’s introduction, Sekou Cooke provides an overview of “hip-hop culture in built form.”
He discusses his book “Hip-hop architecture” (2021), focusing DJs as a model of hacking technology, as in the project “3D THIS WAY? Turntable” applied the scratch, the spin, and the cross-fade to 3D printers.
Cooke discusses in detail projects including:
“ADU 1s & 2s” (2021)
“We Outchea” for the exhibit “Reconstructions” at MOMA (2021)
“Grids + Griots” for the 2021 Chicago Architecture Biennial
Cooke ends with a discussion of a current project, “The Remix”, that explores manual, analog inputs translated into design outputs via hacked 3D printers.
