About:
As Europe's largest economy and second most populous nation, Germany is a key member of the continent's economic, political, and defense organizations. European power struggles immersed Germany in two devastating world wars in the first half of the 20th century and left the country occupied by the victorious allied powers of the US, the UK, France, and the Soviet Union in 1945. With the advent of the Cold War, two German states were formed in 1949: the Western Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) and the Eastern German Democratic Republic (GDR).

The democratic FRG embedded itself in key Western economic and security organizations, the EC (now the EU) and NATO, while the communists GDR was on the frontline of the Soviet-led Warsaw Pact. The decline of the USSR and the end of the Cold War allowed for German reunification in 1990. Since then, Germany has become a powerhouse on the global stage and the economic center of Europe.

Famous Germans include composers Beethoven, Bach, Georg Handel, and Johannes Brahms. Influential electronic musicians Kraftwerk, visual artists Albrecht Durer, Peter Paul Rubens, and Max Ernst, and writers Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and the Brothers Grimm have all significantly influenced world culture.

Germany fun facts:
- PRISON ESCAPE: is not against the law in Germany. German law states that it's human nature to want to be free, so prisoners have the right to escape jail.
- It's ILLEGAL TO RUN OUT OF FUEL on the Autobahn. Poor planners can be fined and have their license suspended for up to six months.
- OVER 800 MILLION CURRYWURSTS are eaten in Germany each year. This widely popular sausage with spicy ketchup combo even has its own museum in Berlin!
- Bavarians have A TRADITION CALLED Frühschoppen which means having a glass of beer before noon. They claim it aids digestion and boosts the metabolism.
- Despite its name, the game CHINESE CHECKERS was invented in Germany in 1892.
