Doubleflute | Circular Breathing @NewFluteDesigns #aotearoa #taonga #newzealand

...a little doubleflute made of beautiful black argillite stone, carved by master-stonecarver Clem Mellish:
the lower flute is a kind of oblique end-blown flute, but without fingerholes. It's pitch can be varied within one octave, by partially opening/closing the end.
The upper flute is a noseflute.
The ring finger and middle finger of one hand close the ends of both flutes, to lower and control the pitch. The thumb of the same hand closes the second nostril while playing the noseflute. The fingers of the other hand control the fingerholes of the upper flute.

This type of flute, with this combination, is my own design, it is not part of any tradition as far as I know.

The idea is, to practise and master a particularly high level of breath control:
the player has to learn, to direct a certain amount/percentage of their breath to the upper flute, while keeping the sound of the lower flute going. Both flutes need to be controlled independently, which is a bit of a challenge.
In this video, the lower flute is being played using a type of 'circular breathing', to achieve continuous notes, while the upper noseflute plays little melody-lines on top of this.

It is like two breathing-meditations at once.
