How to Fix 100% Disk Usage in Windows
1. Check the Disk Usage
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc
- Open Task Manager
- Look at the Disk column
If it shows 100%, continue with the solutions below.

2. Disable Windows Search
Windows Search sometimes keeps indexing and causes high disk usage.
Steps:
- Press Windows + R
- Type: services.msc
- Find Windows Search
- Right-click → Properties
- Set Startup type: Disabled
- Click Stop → OK

3. Disable Superfetch (SysMain)
SysMain sometimes creates heavy disk load.
Steps:
1. Press Windows + R
2. Type: services.msc
3. Find SysMain
4. Right-click → Properties
5. Set Startup type: Disabled
6. Click Stop → OK

4. Disable Startup Apps
Many programs launch at startup and cause high disk usage.
Steps:
1. Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc
2. Go to Startup
3. Right-click and Disable unnecessary apps

5. Run Disk Check
To repair disk issues:
1. Open Start
2. Type cmd
3. Right-click Command Prompt → Run as Administrator
4. Type: chkdsk /f /r
5. Press Y to schedule
6. Restart your PC

6. Clear Temporary Files
1. Press Windows + R
- Type: temp → Delete all
2. Press Windows + R again
- Type: %temp% → Delete all
3. Open Run again
- Type: prefetch → Delete all

7. Run Disk Cleanup
Open Start and search Disk Cleanup
Select your drive
Select items to delete
Click OK

8. Turn Off Background Apps
1. Press Windows + I
2. Go to Privacy → Background apps
3. Turn off apps you don’t need

9. Check for Viruses or Malware
Use:
1. Windows Defender
2. Malwarebytes
3. Any trusted antivirus
Malware can cause 100% disk usage.

10. Reset Virtual Memory (Page File)
1. Press Windows + I
2. System → About
3. Click Advanced system settings
4. Under Performance, click Settings
5. Go to Advanced tab
6. Click Change
7. Uncheck Automatically manage paging file size
8. Set Custom size and restart

How to Calculate the Right Virtual Memory Size
✅ Recommended Page File Size
If Your RAM is 4GB
- Initial Size (MB): 4096
- Maximum Size (MB): 6144 (or 1.5 × RAM)

If Your RAM is 8GB
- Initial Size (MB): 8192
- Maximum Size (MB): 12288

If Your RAM is 16GB
- Initial Size (MB): 16384
- Maximum Size (MB): 24576

If Your RAM is 32GB
- Initial Size (MB): 32768
- Maximum Size (MB): 49152

⚠️ Do NOT set it too low or too high

Setting too high can slow PC.
Setting too low can cause errors or crashes.
