The renowned researcher Prof. Marie Trone from Valencia College visited Duisburg Zoo because, in the Amazon, she has a major problem: the water is almost opaque. Watching the animals underwater from a safe distance is therefore completely impossible. For this reason, there are no reliable stock numbers. We talked with her about her important research that is about to change that.

Stock numbers are very important for species conservation. How should one count animals that can not be identified without a doubt? The research approach of the group of Prof. Marie Trone is now to count them on the basis of the individual sounds they make. For this, she has built a device that also determines the position of the animals.

So to check whether the data from the measurement match the real position data, she visited the two Inias that are still in dolphinariums. One didn't vocalize, but the Amazon River dolphin "Baby" at Duisburg Zoo, which inhabits the installation called the Rio Negro, gave her best results.

The Duisburg Zoo is a place of important dolphin research that would never be possible without the zoo but is very important to protect the animals in the wild. This fact shows the importance of dolphinaria in modern zoos. In the Duisburg Zoo, the researchers can work with two species: Atlantic bottlenose dolphins and the Amazon river dolphin "Baby".
