Julius von Sachs was a German botanist from Breslau, Prussian Silesia. He is considered the founder of experimental plant physiology and one of the founders of modern aquatic culture. He was born on October 2, 1832 in Wrocław, Poland.

The purpose of the Sachs experiment was to determine the role of light in the process of photosynthesis and to prove that the product of photosynthesis is glucose in the form of organic matter stored in the form of starch.
