Sayf ad-Din Qutuz, nephew of the Sultan of Khwarazm, was captured by the Mongols as a child and sold into slavery in Damascus. But he never gave up. He rose from slave to Sultan, and at the Battle of Ain Jalut in 1260 AD, he inflicted the first true defeat in Mongol history and liberated the entire Levant.
