BMW Airhead Wheel Bearing Assembly - R60/5 Project

Tapered motorcycle wheel bearings are crucial components responsible for enabling smooth wheel rotation and stability in motorcycle wheel assemblies. These bearings are designed with a tapered shape, allowing them to handle both radial and axial loads effectively.

One significant advantage of tapered bearings is their ability to distribute weight and force evenly across the bearing surfaces, reducing wear and increasing longevity. They are commonly found in the wheel hubs of motorcycles due to their excellent load-bearing capabilities. BMW decided to install these bearings in their motorcycles, even though the bearing setup is more expensive than a regular radial bearings setup.

Proper maintenance and assembly of tapered wheel bearings are essential for safe and optimal motorcycle performance. Regularly greasing and ensuring the correct seating of these bearings is critical to prevent premature wear and potential safety issues. In this video, I share the tapered wheel bearing assembly process from start to finish and I go into great detail about the preload settings. This video is helpful for most motorcycle tapered wheel bearings but is specific to BMW /5 motorcycle wheel bearings. Over the years, BMW improved and simplified this setup, so be sure to compare your bearing pack assembly before attempting this repair.
