News: भारत के Chandrayaan-2 mission ने Moon पर पानी की खोज में एक बड़ा breakthrough दिया है। Physical Research Laboratory (PRL) के scientists ने ultra-cold lunar craters के अंदर subsurface water ice के मजबूत सबूत पाए हैं।

ये findings journal *npj Space Exploration* में publish हुई हैं और Chandrayaan-2 orbiter के radar observations पर आधारित हैं, खासकर Moon के south pole region में—जिसे future human missions और lunar base के लिए सबसे महत्वपूर्ण माना जा रहा है।

PRL की team—Rishitosh Sinha, Rajiv Bharti, Kinsuk Acharyya, Sanjay Mishra, Neeraj Srivastava और Anil Bhardwaj—ने orbiter के Dual Frequency Synthetic Aperture Radar (DFSAR) से मिले data का analysis किया। यह advanced radar lunar surface के कुछ meters नीचे तक देख सकता है।

Study में focus नौ “doubly shadowed craters” पर था, जो बड़े permanently shadowed craters के अंदर स्थित हैं। ये regions अरबों सालों से लगभग पूरी तरह अंधेरे में रहते हैं। इनके steep walls sunlight, reflected heat और radiation को रोक देते हैं, जिससे यहां का तापमान करीब -248°C तक गिर जाता है—Solar System के सबसे ठंडे इलाकों में से एक।

Scientists का मानना है कि ऐसी extreme cold conditions में comets, asteroids या पुराने volcanic activity से आया water ice surface के नीचे सुरक्षित रह सकता है।

Research में पाया गया कि नौ में से चार craters में radar signatures water ice की मौजूदगी से मेल खाते हैं। सबसे मजबूत evidence Faustini crater के अंदर स्थित F2 crater से मिला।

Researchers के अनुसार, यहां high circular polarisation ratio (CPR) और low depolarisation signals देखे गए—जो संकेत देते हैं कि radar waves rough rocks के बजाय underground ice से interact कर रही थीं।

यह discovery इसलिए अहम है क्योंकि लंबे समय से यह debate चल रही थी कि Moon के poles पर दिखने वाले radar reflections ice के कारण हैं या सिर्फ चट्टानों के कारण। इस study ने दोनों में फर्क करने का नया तरीका सुझाया है—high CPR और low polarisation का combination subsurface ice का strong indicator हो सकता है।

Moon पर पानी future space missions के लिए बेहद valuable resource माना जाता है। इसे drinking water, breathable oxygen और rocket fuel में बदला जा सकता है।

South pole अब NASA, China और India के बीच एक नई space race का केंद्र बन चुका है। Chandrayaan-2 की यह discovery संकेत देती है कि Moon के इस हिस्से में surface के नीचे प्राचीन ice के hidden reserves मौजूद हो सकते हैं।

Scientists का कहना है कि यह ice evenly distributed नहीं है—कुछ craters में ज्यादा reserves हो सकते हैं। यह जानकारी future astronauts के landing sites तय करने में अहम भूमिका निभा सकती है।
