Why did SpaceX switch to "heavy" stainless steel? #starship #spacexstarship #science #technology

Why did SpaceX switch to "heavy" stainless steel, and how did it actually make the rocket lighter?

The Provocation: Steel is 4x denser than carbon fiber. However, carbon fiber loses strength at 200°C, while 300-series stainless steel maintains its integrity up to 800°C.

The Logic: Because the steel "skin" can handle more heat, the ship needs a much thinner, lighter heat shield. Furthermore, at cryogenic temperatures (-160°C), steel’s strength increases by 50%, whereas other materials become brittle. By using steel, SpaceX traded "light material" for "light systems," a massive net gain for reusability.
