Over the last few years, the term 'singe page application' has become commonplace, but what exactly does this term mean? It can actually mean a variety of different thing, and for the techies among us there can be tons of different ways to explain the term. But a high-level, simple explanation might go like this:
A single page application is a new breed of web application that is faster and more efficient than old school style websites. The reason is that a small program loads into the user's browser and handles most of the work, including moving things around the screen, displaying content and graphics, etc. Because all of the graphics and initial data are included in the initial load time, the application may take a few seconds longer to load when you first visit the site, but after that point the browser will only 'talk' to the server when it needs new data - making the general experience much more fluid and fast.
Compare this to the way websites used to be made: a browser requests a page and the server sends the entire page to the browser. When the user clicks a link, a completely new page is sent to the browser, even if very little has changed from the first page.
A great example of the single page application is Gmail. You may have noticed that Gmail takes an extra 2 or 3 seconds to load on your browser, but it seems to never refresh when you receive or send email. That's the magic of the single page approach.
Single page applications are typically made in JavaScript, and it can be a little harder to create this kind of application that it is to create simple web pages. It's become so popular, however, that it's quickly become the standard approach to website building around the world.
