Peace Games: What if we tried something different on the Korean Peninsula?
Amid increased missile tests from Pyongyang and with negotiations over its nuclear program at a stand still, some policy makers have wondered – what if negotiations with North Korea had taken a completely different approach?
Qi's Michael Swaine spoke with East Asia Senior Research Fellow Jessica Lee, who co-authored Beyond Deterrence: A Peace Game Exercise for the Korean Peninsula.
The virtual role-playing peace game exercise conducted in October 2021 that simulated diplomatic negotiations aimed at making tangible progress toward improving relations, enhancing security, and building confidence on the Korean Peninsula.
The exercise, hosted by the United States Institute of Peace, Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft in Washington, and the Sejong Institute in Seoul, consisted of negotiating teams representing the United States, South Korea, North Korea, and China.
