"I don't know the names of any pop musicians. Pop music is standardised, it's made to please the largest audience possible. I also compose to please a large audience, but when you listen to my music, you understand that I have studied and applied the whole history of composition.“
-Ennio Morricone (1928-2020)

Who, back in 1934, could have suspected that little 6-year-old Ennio, who had just finished off his first piece of music for his parents, would once become “…the most important composer of today’s time”, according to Warren Beatty (and in all probability many others)? The fact that a jealous Madonna probably told off her boyfriend Warren back then for entitling someone else than herself with such a statement, should hardly have impressed former trumpet player Ennio in any way. Namely Ennio Morricone, who will turn 75 on the 10th of November this year, can refer to far more than 400 pieces of film-music, various pop-classics, numerous pieces of chamber music, several Oscar-, Academy Awards-, Golden Globe- and Grammy-nominations and an endless list of various prizes and awards won over the last 40 years.
But seriously, who did not whistle the them of Once Upon A Time In The West, after whacking the neighbours ‘on-our-lawn-crapping-cat’ with a crotch? And let’s face it, who has not used Ennio’s melody to My Name Is Nobody as an inspiration to try one of those ‘open-hand-slaps’ to the ear on your younger buddy (Adam, I am honestly sorry!)? What would rainy Sundays have been like without Ennio’s revolutionary impact on his most celebrated genre and our favourite afternoon-engagement, the Spaghetti Western? Accordingly, Ennio Morricone did not only set music to an endless list of topnotch movie-classics*, but above all one can say he set the soundtrack to parts of our lives.

Two Contrasts In The Mix

Approximately one and a half years ago, soundtrack producer and music supervisor Stefan Rambow from Cinesoundz approached us with the prophecy that a mixture between Ennio Morricone’s epical compositions and his mondo-style pop gems and the electrifying, fresh ideas developed by producers of Compost Records’ circle of friends, would become a sweet little something! We shared this vision and thus decided to combine Ennio’s legendary melodies with almost every possible style of dance-music, ranging from Downbeat, Drum&Bass, Jazzed-Up-Broken-Beats, House, Tech-House, Electropop to Easy Listening, Ambient and Hip Hop. De facto, this is no ordinary remix project. Solely the opportunity for young producers to be able to touch and work with Morricone’s opus, resolved in a storm of excitement! But there were also voices that expressed a certain fear of paling beside the godfather of film-music, arguing that Ennio’s groundbreaking compositions would be a hard nut to crack. Movie-fans also seemed to be sceptical when thinking of the idea of modern sounds being combined with their idols melodies, not to mention the sh*tload of work we would have to invest in clarifying copyrights with many different companies !

Well, having the outcome of one and a half years work in hands and with watery eyes, we can proudly announce that the original melodies have been remixed in a breathtaking, charming and refreshing manner, movie-fans are now convinced and we have courageously managed to overcome the huge pile of deskwork! At this point we are more than happy that the maestro himself, though sceptical at the beginning, gave his blessing to the finished mixes! His son Giovanni was so impressed by some of the remixes, that he decided to use International Pony’s „La Moda“ remix for his debutfilm “Al cuore si comanda”, which will be scored by his father and his brother Andrea Morricone and will be produced by Italy’s most important producers Medusa!

With the help of Ennio Morricone’s melodies actors no other than Clint Eastwood, Robert de Niro, Terence Hill, Jean-Paul Belmondo, Charles Bronsen, Kevin Costner, Harrison Ford, Sean Penn, Michael Douglas and Jack Nicholson turned into men. This must have been one of the reasons why so many (mostly male) artists approached us on whether they could join the project, and thus acquiring the top dogs of international producers for this project was quite easy-going. They show their respect for the maestro by interpreting their favourite pieces of his work on ‘Ennio Morricone Remixes Vol. 1 & 2’ with much love and admiration. A formerly smaller project now ended up to be a huge compilation, consisting of two volumes with 41 beautiful tracks in total ! The second part of the double cd is with you now.
