This song was written by Paul Simon and performed by Simon & Garfunkel in 1964.
In an article written by Carlo Romeo Aug 15, 2018 he states: “Ever feel distressed and alienated by the shallowness of the social environment we live in, to the point of feeling unable to get in touch with others, or even with your own sensations? If so, Simon and Garfunkel’s “The Sound of Silence” might be the song for you.”
In Carlo’s article he unlocks the profound meaning that shockingly for a song written in the early 60’s applies more today than it ever did since written. In the opening words, “Hello darkness my old friend, the author has no one to talk to but the dark, to whom he tells almost like a confession, about a dream he had. The first theme of the vision is loneliness. He finds himself walking alone on a narrow path when the cold night is suddenly lit up by what appears almost as a neon light, but more icy, naked or unnatural. This lights convey the idea of a cold modern society. Today it would portray the symbol that our technological society has replaced the traditional warmth of the fireplace, bearer of communion and togetherness, with the impersonality of artificial light.
Simon refers to the multitude of people representing humanity as a whole. They are not acting normally in his eyes. Their actions are void of significance, they seem disempowered and alienated. Talking without speaking, hearing without listening hinting to the present-day interactions as impersonal and detached.
It is undeniable that the society we live in pushes us to live frantic, stressful lives, leading to a pattern of self absorption and detachment.
In Simon’s dream people are writing songs that voices never share. The author believes that such loneliness and the inability to communicate, art will parish allowing us to become desensitized to the evil around us, as we are no longer able to raise our voices against cruelty and injustice. No one dares disturb the sound of silence. Silence is thus characterized not as something positive and peaceful, but as an enemy. The author feels as though his warning to people is in vain as he feels unheard.
The final verse concludes people idolize the neon sign they themselves have created, worshipping it as a God; the author means to show how modern people have converted to a new religion of electronics, money, appearances and shiny futility.

To see facial expressions and feel human touch we then can gain back what humans truly desire and that is meaningful and deep relationships based on personal touch, sound and love.
Dehumanization can lead a society to become past feeling, without compassion, no empathy and severe loneliness.
