Virginia Buttonweed is a commonly occurring broadleaf weed in the southeastern United States that’s known for being difficult to get rid of. Virginia Buttonweed can grow in clumps, spread out over a lawn, or isolated & surrounded by turfgrass. Early in the season, you’ll know you’re dealing with Virginia Buttonweed by noting how the leaves grow. Leaves grow directly out from the stem, growing in pairs that are opposite each other. They don’t grow from petioles (or branches/smaller stems) and the top-side of the leaves will be darker than the underside.

Virginia buttonweed is primarily a problem in warm-season grass but is known to occur in cool-season grass as well. It’s common in lawns throughout the southeastern United States, and along the east coast & Gulf Coast. Like most weeds, Virginia Buttonweed thrives in moist and wet areas of the lawn, and it also grows well where the turf is weak or thin.
Virginia buttonweed will emerge in spring and grow throughout the summer. It’s best to treat Virginia buttonweed before mid-summer when the weed is at its strongest.

After identifying your pest and inspecting for activity on your property, it’s time to start treatment.
Before starting any treatment, be sure to wear your personal protective equipment, or PPE, and remember to keep all people and pets off the treated areas until dry. To get rid of Virginia Buttonweed, you’ll need to use a post-emergent herbicide that’s labeled to control Virginia buttonweed. We recommend either TopShot or Fahrenheit. TopShot is a liquid herbicide concentrate that can control many broadleaf weeds. This product is labeled for both warm and cool-season grasses and is suitable for residential lawns.

The best way to keep Virginia buttonweed from growing in your lawn is by maintaining proper lawn health. By strengthening your turfgrass and keeping up with maintenance, you’ll choke out weeds and give them little opportunity to grow. You’ll need to improve your lawn’s air circulation and water evaporation. Be sure to water your lawn properly.
