In a disturbing development highlighting the growing pressure on religious minorities in India, two Christians—Harjeet and Sunita Masih—have been arrested under allegations of conducting "illegal religious conversions." The police claim they were persuading people to convert to Christianity under the pretense of healing and were found in possession of Christian literature.

Sitapur Police Superintendent Rajesh Dwivedi confirmed that similar cases have been reported in nearby areas like Sidhauli and Nigoohi. A Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed to investigate alleged financial links and broader Christian networks.

The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its ideological ally, the Hindu nationalist group RSS, are often accused of marginalizing religious minorities. Reports of forced "Ghar Wapsi" (homecoming) ceremonies—where Christians and Muslims are coerced back into Hinduism—are common in several states.
Uttar Pradesh, with a population of nearly 200 million, is home to only 350,000 Christians—just 0.18% of the state’s population.
This incident raises serious concerns about the erosion of religious freedom in India and the increasing criminalization of faith-based activities, especially for Christians and other minority groups.
