Following their transition to the F/A-18 Hornet, the Blue Angels opted to remove formation landings from their demonstration. This crowd-pleasing maneuver was omitted due to landing gear issues and the absence of a chute for blown tire situations, unlike their previous aircraft. However, with subsequent enhancements to the landing gear, Boss George Dom led the 1998 Blue Angels in reintroducing the awe-inspiring Diamond Landing.
